It‘s well accepted that cats are self centered, rude and selfish, but you and I know that’s only half the story don’t we?

Sure, it’s on their own terms, but cats provide companionship, love and affection that we can’t bear the thought of doing without. In return, we provide food, a safe place to sleep and the odd tit bit or treat but you might not be surprised to hear that our cats want more!

Having worked in the veterinary and pet health industry for over 20 years, here is something I know your cat wants you to know:

Unfortunately too many cats suffer because their owners don’t know what to do in an emergency.

Over the holidays, a good friend of mine almost lost her British Shorthair, Anastazia, after she ingested a foreign object. Fortunately, my friend called me, and I was able to tell her exactly what to do in the crucial first minutes before she was able to get this beautiful kitty to the Veterinary Emergency Centre. If it hadn’t been for her quick thinking in calling me, crucial minutes would have been lost and Anastazia may not have made it.

Of course, not everyone has a pet professional on speed dial — do you?

You might even want to consider doing a short pet first aid course — some even allow you to bring your pets along! To find out whether there are courses in your local area, ask your vet or your local shelter, SPCA, RSPCA or similar.
